The BlackBerry Curve 8900 has shown up on RIM's German web site after being announced by T-Mobile Germany. This new Curve model replaces the existing 8300 and brings a more polished, Bold-like look while maintaining the Curve's smaller form factor and overall QWERTY keypad design. And while the Curve 8900 is 2mm longer than the 8300, it makes up for that by being a full 2mm thinner.
The Curve received a few upgrades when getting bumped up into the 8900 range. For starters, it inherits the Bold's lovely 480x360 pixel display, which is one of the most compelling features found on the flagship Bold model. The new Curve 8900 also has both WiFi and GPS, and features a new 3.2 megapixel camera. It's processor has also been upgraded, with the 8900 using a new 512MHz unit.
One thing that might bother some folks is the total lack of 3G support on the new Curve 8900. Like the original Curve 8300, the 8900 works only on the four main GSM/EDGE frequency bands. While it is possible that we'll see 3G support on it in the future, it doesn't seem likely in our opinion.
RIM has said that the new Curve will reach markets beyond Germany in the first quarter of 2009, including the USA. Pricing seems to be aggressively set, with the Curve 8900 to be available in Germany for as little as 5EUR (US$6) with a contract.
